| - Prologue:
It's been a while after the accident. My legs are still sore, but at least I can walk again. The doctors tell me that everything will get back to normal after a few years. If only they knew I couldn't wait that long. It was a set-up, f*ck all that accident bullshit. He would never make a mistake like that, he's a pro.
My left foot is ready to slam the clutch, my right foot brakes gently, I slam the clutch whilst giving but the slightest throttle, shift down to second gear, I notice he went wide so I push for the inside. My heart races as I notice the opening, this is it! We're door to door, only four corners left. He's got the inside, then I've got the inside for the following two corners. I know I've got him. All four cylinders fired up to their fullest potential, the tires screech as I enter the second to last corner, his headlights blind me, but that doesn't matter. The only thing I'm focused on is the fallen tree, our finish line. I've got my ticket out, no more illegal racing, no more cops to run from, no more f*cking thugs wanting their money back. I'm in the clear, baby!
I'm in the clear.. I remember thinking that. All my problems would be solved with that race. Except they didn't. There hasn't been a single night where I haven't had the same nightmare. My headlights lighting up all kinds of different shit, just flashes of trees, the road, his f*cking car. I swear I saw his grin. I swear. I remember letting go of the steering wheel, everything felt like it was happening in slowmotion as I inhaled and closed my eyes.
- Chapter One - An Unexpected Change:
A year went by, working long shifts in a garage just to get by. My luck was about to change. The photographs I took of the cars I restored generated an interest. A spokesman of the Horizon Festival in Australia called me to offer me a job as a photographer. She told me she heard about the accident and knew about my past. It was all a bit vague, but I remember the Horizon name.. A few years back, there was a huge gathering of motoring enthousiast in Europe. It was easy money, a lot of rich boys with more bank than brains. I woke up from my daydream as she offered me a signing bonus of THIRTY THOUSAND AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS, with a weekly wage of two thousand! She greets me at the airport, a friendly girl, not older than 30, the secretary type. As I spot the BMW 2-series behind her, she hands me the keys. This is nuts, I even get a car to loan? I can hardly grasp it all, it seems too good to be true. She says I can use it until I get my own car, that car prices rose as the festival generated so much interest. "No worries," she says, "we've got you covered!" We get in and start driving. She explains whatever is expected of me, says I can crash at an appartement in the city until I've found my own spot and hands me a phone. The night is still young and it's nice not to feel haunted for a change. I actually feel free for the first time in a long while. We drive through a tunnel when I ask the girl if I can take a picture. She tells me to stop calling her miss and to start calling her Chloe. "It's your job to take pictures, isn't it?" Cloe gets behind the wheel as I grab my equipment. She doesn't mess around! Revving the six-cylinder for what it's worth, I jumped up a bit as I see her smiling from ear to ear. After some playing around, we decided to call it a day. I let Chloe drive the rest of the trip as she was obviously enjoying it. There was something about the way she drove, so in control, I don't know, it's probably nothing. I was tired. We arrive at her place, say our goodbyes and go off on our own way. Is this the start of something completely new? I sure as hell hope so.
- Chapter Two - The Fairest of Ladies:
The past few months has been quiet, the photography business is booming, I'm making new friends, my old friends come over for Aussie BBQ's, life's good for a change. Something pretty special has happened, too.. Chloe took me to some of her best friends, we got to talking and it came up that I needed a car. They all knew I was into old Japanese cars so from one thing came another. This dude, Chris, came talking to me about how his dad had to spend a lot of time in Kyoto and Nagasaki for his old job. So much that he decided it was better to own a car in Japan, too. This guy kept beating around the bushes, I wanted to know what car it was so I asked him to spill the milk. "Some kind of Z car, orange. Lot of fun to drive!" Hmm, I thought to myself, could be anything? A 300ZX perhaps? Pretty common in that era, fun to drive, not sure they come in orange though. Then there's the 280ZX, the 260Z, the 240Z.. All possible! On the drive to Chris' old man's barn, I kept hoping it'd be an old Fairlady..
When we met with Chris' dad, the old man couldn't stop talking about the car and the adventures he had in it, closely looking behind to be sure his wife wouldn't hear them.. It was a Z 432, one of the rarest Z's ever made. I couldn't believe my ears, this is for sale? Had to be in a bad condition, I kept thinking. The old man opened up the barn and I fell in love. There she was, in an utmost perfect condition, this car was cared for lovingly. From that moment I knew I had to have it. I also knew this car wouldn't come cheap.. After a while of negotiating on a price under the pleasure of a backyard BBQ, we've decided on $40.000, a complete steal! The old man said he saw that I would care for it, drive it, maintain it in good condition. He said he'd find that more valuable than money. We kept talking for a bit till it was dark and I went on my way. Goosebumps as I started the engine, Chris' and his family waved me goodbye as I rode towards Chloe's. Guess I'm staying there for a while, can't afford a house if I'm buying cars worth 40 grand!
